Mark Fettes

Mark Fettes (born 21 June 1961) is an Esperantist and university professor of education, who has been since 2013 President of the World Esperanto Association, known by its Esperanto initials as UEA.
==Education==
Fettes was born in the United States to parents who had immigrated from England. At the age of ten he emigrated with his parents to New Zealand. During his last year of high school he won a scholarship to study at Britain's Cambridge University. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree there, he undertook doctoral studies in molecular biology at the University of British Columbia in Canada, but in 1986 decided to leave this research field and wrote a master's dissertation instead.
Fettes had begun to learn Esperanto from his uncle Christopher Fettes as a 14-year-old. During his university studies he was active in the Cambridge Esperanto Group and in ''Junularo Esperantista Brita'', the British organization for young Esperantists. He was a member of the local committee for the 69th World Congress of Esperanto, held in Vancouver in 1984. After having worked with indigenous groups in Canada, in 1996 Fettes began studying education at the University of Toronto, where he received a doctorate in 2000.
